About Me

Dr. Andrew Young Choi, Asian and Korean male Licensed Psychologist specializing in integrative, evidence-based psychodynamic psychotherapy with diverse BIPOC, LGBTQ, Asian American populations and young adults and professionals.

Hello, it’s Dr. Andy Choi

I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited doctoral program at a top public university. I am credentialed with the National Register of Health Service Psychologists (#146735), having met the highest professional standards of my field. I am licensed to practice in California (PSY33136), Washington, DC (PSY200001465), and Hawaiʻi (PSY-1916).

My clinical training is broad and varied—spanning community behavioral health clinics, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospitals, and university counseling centers. I have worked at several minority-serving institutions and served clients of various ages, circumstances, and social strata. This eclectic background informs my ability to creatively integrate schools of psychotherapeutic, intellectual, and critical sociopolitical thought.

I fulfilled my APA-accredited Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at the Counseling and Student Development Center of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Serving a uniquely diverse community of young adults and professionals, I strengthened my expertise in delivering culturally responsive, goal-focused mental health interventions—supporting my clients to resolve psychological barriers to wellness and success.

Afterward, I completed my Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Psychology at Cambridge Health Alliance / Harvard Medical School. I specialized in providing intensive psychodynamic treatment to politically and socioeconomically vulnerable populations in the public sector. Collaborating with integrated healthcare teams, I helped clients address issues from everyday problems to major traumas and psychiatric illnesses.

Currently, alongside my private practice, I hold a specialist faculty appointment at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. My roles include training behavioral health professionals and conducting psychological scholarship on evolving and intersectional forms of racism-related stress and their mitigation through strengths-based strategies. I publish and present my work nationally and internationally.

In my personal time, I enjoy outdoor and social activities and visual and performing arts. I also read and travel regularly, appreciating lifelong learning and new cultural experiences. I use he/him/his pronouns.
